Stock icons will always get dull, even in the latest Windows version. You can try downloading and applying new ones, but they will get boring as well. Icomancer gives you the possibility of creating your own icons, using a series of textures, templates and more. Instead of applying the icons to all folders and shortcuts, the software lets you associate them with individual folders. This means that one or more folders can look completely different from other ones. The application is free and you can use it without encountering adds or hidden restrictions.

You will need to install .NET Framework 4.0 and ImageMagick before setting up Icomancer on your computer. You can either install them separately, or download the Icomancer full bundle, which includes everything you need, but the file is obviously larger (90 Mb) and it may take longer to download.

Before using the software's interface, you will have to select or create an online account. The good news is that you will not have to open your inbox to confirm your new account. Once you provide a username, password and an email address, Icomancer's interface will load immediately.

Icomancer gives you a wide range of possibilities when it comes to creating and applying new folder icons. The application's home screen consists of options for crafting new icons, imbuing existing ones with a folder or shortcut, applying a picture or icon to a folder immediately and more. These options will bring up new windows, where you can edit or apply your icons. Crafting new icons involves selecting colors, textures, templates, styles and other elements. You may select a color from a column, on the left side of the window, where they are organized in basic, lighter or darker colors. A second column contains various textures and you only need to click one to apply it.

Besides colors and textures, the software lets you select Win 7, Vista or XP 2012 folder templates, as well as crystal blue templates, which are included in Win 7 and Vista, but they were never applied. When a folder contains images or other files, its icon is displayed along with small thumbnails for the contained files. Icomancer allows you to select a picture from your hard drive and choose how to display it on the folder's icon. It can look like it is coming out of the folder, like it is inside the folder or you can set it as the folder's cover. Depending on what style you select, you may apply a certain effect, like beveling the picture.

Icons can be saved on the hard drive or set as a skeleton, which can be imbued or embodied with default icons. The Imbue option, on the software's home screen, makes it possible to change the looks of individual folder or shortcut icons. You can target icons with browsing options or by dragging and dropping them over the interface. You will be able to select and apply the same colors and textures or apply a saved icon. One of Icomancer's main features is the possibility of finding new templates, colors, textures or entire icons on the Internet, which is why you need to create an online account. They are organized in numerous categories, and you just need to select one and click a button to download it. Alternatively, you can join the community by sharing your own work.

Pros:
The available textures and templates will make your folder icons look better. You can make a wide range of combinations or download shared icons from the Internet. It does not take long to get used to Icomancer's interface and its functions. You will also appreciate the fact that you can use the application for free.

Cons:
You can not save new icons without selecting a picture.

Icomancer makes it possible to change the looks of your folder icons however you want. From brick walls to shiny glass, you may create a very broad range of themes for your icons.
